This is what I write after every blog, but the continuation ended October 2023 …
As many readers know, as you are from Cape Town, my fabulous student Kyle Smith passed away in September 2023. I tried to hold myself up for as long as I could, pretending it just didn’t happen helped for some time, but I had to deal with everything that happened last year at some point and that point was reached in November 2023.
It’s a funny thing this getting older. Being in my 50ies now I have gotten some life experience and you realise you have to let things go and behind you. I have lost (too) many lovely friends and colleagues over the years and every time you get reminded to live in the moment and find contentment in what you do and how you live your life. Happiness is fleeting, contentment can be a constant (this to my experience).
Before this turns into a life coaching blog let me move on π¬

Donat Pellei, Frances Levenderis (ad hoc) & me!
Contentment I find these days in playing double bass. When I started playing bass in my teenage years it was more a thing of ‘I need to do something with my life’, never imagining I would enjoy it so much while playing in the philharmonic orchestra of Cape Town with this lovely section I lead for 7 years already! Now that I’ve been playing this instrument for almost 40 years (π³ really…40…!?! π) playing is so easy, you worry less and you just enjoy the music and the instrument. It’s great!
Fun I’m having posting reels on Instagram on behalf of Smokey, the 5 string double bass, who belongs to the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. We became good buddies over the years ( passed the 15 year anniversary by now… ) and both of us enjoy a bit of dropping low C’s and B’s π€π» π yeah. Follow him on @smokeythe5string on Instagram.
Happiness I find when I get on one of my 2 motorbikes and already just starting them brings a big smile on my face π (that sound of a Triumph Speed Twin … ππ»). Riding around Cape Town gives me serenity and a calmness which makes me be able to deal with all the stresses of living in a busy city and having to deal with various people day to day. To follow my bike adventures follow the links to @capetownmotolife on Instagram and Cape Town MotoLife on Youtube.

So to end off, I am happy to write that after a long year and a bit I am in a space again where I can write about the week-to-week life of a bass player in Cape Town and I really enjoy writing so here’s to:
To be continued … π
